In a bid to empower and educate people living with Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD), the Cure Kids Fiji Community Organization: Heart Heroes Fiji, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health & Medical Services, hosted a pivotal support group event at the Tanoa Waterfront Hotel Conference Room on June 29th, 2024. The event aimed to provide crucial support and information to newly diagnosed patients and those defaulting on their treatments within the Lautoka Medical Area.
The “Support Group for Newly Diagnosed & Defaulting RHD Patients,” drew participation from a diverse group including patients, their families, RHD liaison nurses, and community champions. A total of 45 attendees actively engaged in discussions and presentations throughout the day.
Heart Heroes Fiji manager, Mrs. Erini Tokarua noted that “the aim was not only to educate but also to foster a supportive environment where patients and their families could share experiences and gain essential knowledge.” Sessions included comprehensive talks on RHD management, oral health, and nutrition, underscoring the interconnectedness of overall health and disease management.
Among the attendees was a notable individual living with RHD and intellectual disabilities, highlighting the event’s inclusive approach. “Engaging with participants like her emphasizes our commitment to reaching every member of the community, regardless of personal challenges,” expressed Mrs. Tokarua.
Despite the success, challenges such as last-minute cancellations due to health issues and logistical hurdles were encountered by some who were not able to attend and therefore supporting the need continuously invest in events like these as our need to influence behavioral change in our communities. Organizers stressed the importance of improved communication channels with healthcare facilities to streamline participant registration and enhance event planning efficiency.
The outcomes of the event were promising, with attendees reporting increased awareness of their health conditions and a strengthened resolve to adhere to treatment regimens. Recommendations stemming from the event included closer collaboration between health departments, enhanced support for RHD nurses, and expanded outreach to include individuals with disabilities.
Looking ahead, we are very optimistic about future events tailored to address specific community needs, including enhanced school health screenings and expanded disability-inclusive initiatives.
